Science - Technology - Engineering - Arts - Math (STEAM)

What is STEAM?
STEAM is an acronym for the fields of study in the categories of science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. It has become commonplace in education discussions as a reference to the shortage of skilled workers and inadequate education in these areas. The initiative began to address the lack of qualified candidates for high-tech jobs. It also addresses concern that the subjects are often taught in isolation, instead of as an integrated curriculum. Maintaining a citizenry that is well versed in the STEM fields is a key portion of the public education goals of the United States. STEM generally supports broadening the study of engineering within each of the other subjects, and beginning engineering at younger grades, even elementary school. It also brings STEM education to all students rather than only the gifted programs.
What is going on with STEAM at Burlington-Edison?
Burlington-Edison, along with twelve other rural school districts in Washington state is part of the RISE UP (Rural Initiative in STEAM Education and Undergraduate Preparation) and GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) grants setup by the University of Washington. The University of Washington GEAR UP Project is part of a national effort to help students from low-income families prepare for and succeed in higher education.
