All visitors to the LU campus need to check-in at the main office and get a visitor sticker. If you are on campus and do not have a sticker indicating that you have signed-in you will be directed back to the main office to do so. We greatly appreciate your cooperation in making our campus safe for all students.

  • Outer lanes CLOSED during pick-up and drop-off times:
Due to unsafe conditions, the outer two lanes will be prohibited from use during pick-up and drop-off times. You may park your car and walk your child into the building from one of those lanes, but you may not drop your child off from either of those lanes. Only the lane directly in front of the building will be allowed for student pick-up and drop-off. Please be extremely cautious and patient when using this lane. Thank you for your cooperation in helping to improve student safety during pick-up and drop-off times.

Three times per year all of our third through eighth grade students take an assessment known as the Measures of Academic Progress or MAP in reading and math. This assessment allows us to gain information about the ability levels of each student and how to meet the individual needs of each student. If you are looking to help your student in the areas of reading and math, the websites below offer help in both of those areas. Log on to Family Access to find out your child's most recent MAP score and then select the appropriate score to help your child gain confidence and understanding in that area.

  • GRADES 3-8 DISMISSAL TIMES: In an effort to help students get home in a more efficient manner we are staggering our release times at the end of the day for students in grades 3-8. Students who walk home or are picked-up by their parents will continue to be released at 3:30. Due to the busing schedule, the first bus does not leave our campus until 3:45. Therefore, students who ride the bus will remain in class until 3:40 and then released to the buses. This time is non-instructional time, but can be used at the individual teacher's discretion to read quietly, write in their planner or work on homework. If your child normally rides the bus and plans to walk home or be picked-up, please send them with a note at the beginning of the day or call the office so that we are able to avoid this confusion at the end of the day.

  •  After School Pick-ups Please remember to wait for your child at the front of the school, not in the halls or at classroom door. For your child’s safety, teachers on bus duty will not release a child to an adult without clearance from the office. Parents who come to school at the last minute to get their child out of the bus line must first go to the office to get a note from one of the secretaries.

Welcome to Lucille Umbarger School!

November Dates
Citizens' Day: 11/6
Veteran's Day Assembly: 11/10
(No School 11/11)
Parent/Teacher Conferences: 11/20-11/26

Dear LU Families,

Thursday, November 6th is Citizens' Day in the Burlington-Edison School District. Each year schools host members of our community to tour the school and get a taste of what happens during a school day. Our goal is to develop long-term relationships with our community so that we can create school/community parternships that will support student achievement. This year Lucille Umbarger will host Lisa Janicki (Janicki Industries), Rob Martin (Chinook Enterprises) and Susan Thomas (Owner, Bow Hill Blueberries).

Monday, November 10th at 9:30 am will host our annual Veteran's Day assembly. This is our first music program of the year and is one of the most memorable events many of our students and families experience in their time here. Students in grades 4-6 will be performing this year and all Veterans in the community are encouraged to attend and be recognized for their service.

We also look forward to seeing you at parent/teacher conferences that take place later this month from November 20-26. 7th and 8th grade conferences are held in the gymnasium on Monday, November 24th and conferences for grades 1-6 are by appointment. IF you have not received an appointment for your conference or have not scheduled one yet, please contact your child's teacher as soon as possible to do so.
As a staff we are continuing to focus our collaboration time (early release Wednesdays) on closing the achievement gap for our English Language Learners (ELL) in reading. We are engaging in professional development that helps our classrooms meet the needs of all our readers. One way you can helps us at home to achieve our reading goals at school is to make it a part of your nighttime routine to set aside time for your child to read. Read in English or read in your home language! Helping us enforce the importance of reading at home (and doing it together) will go a long way in helping us reach our goals at school.
