Library Idea of the Week

If you've been to any of my conference sessions or workshops, you may remember that one idea I frequently tout is that of maintaining bibliographies that are easy for kids to use, cut down on waste, and can be replaced simply when new books are added.
Instead of making multiple copies of a given booklist ("If You Like Go Ask Alice" or "Favorite Sports Fiction" or whatever), I keep one copy of the booklist in plastic page protectors--multiple pages are held together by metal rings that are easy-open and cheap to buy at office supply stores.
I have a rack on the wall for holding these (although a simple pegboard would work) and they cut down on a lot of frustration. When I used to update my bibs and run copies, the copies would usually go unused (or kids would consult them in the library and leave them behind) and have to be discarded when the bib was updated. Now, I simply update the bibs, print off one copy, and put it in the page protectors for easy use. Occasionally students want a "to go" copy and I just print or photocopy the list I have.
