Library Idea of the Week
October 28, 2003
Cathy Belben, Librarian
Burlington-Edison High School

I write a brief review for every book I read that I think I might recommend to a student, a co-worker, a friend, or a random stranger trapped next to me on the plane. Some of them I actually work on for a while, some I just kind of whip together. But even just a little summary can help remind me what a book is about, and can give kids a preview of something they might want to examine in more detail.

I file the reviews in my hard drive, on a floppy, and I print out 2 copies: 1 for my personal log of books I've read, and one for a notebook that I keep on the counter in the library. For the notebook, each review is loosely categorized (mystery, family problems, etc) and placed in a plastic page protector (I love those things like nobody's business). Kids browse them while they're waiting to check out, etc.

I also save each review as an html document (easy) and then post it to my web page. Here's a link: http://www.be.wednet.edu/Hs/library/Belben's%20Book%20Reviews.htm
