| Thanks
to all B-E staff for your help and support in passing our four-year
levy! The great support we received from our community for our schools
is due, in part, to the day-to-day work that everyone contributes
to this organization. We can all look with pride on our contribution
to the school district, our wonderful students, and a great supportive
community! |

 |
| |
| As
a result of the bond passed two years ago, facilities improvements
continue throughout the school district. Here is a quick update on
what is going on around the district. |
| |
| Lucille
Umbarger Elementary School |
| |
| The
new Lucille Umbarger Elementary School was completed for the start
of school this fall. During the cold winter days that we experienced,
a pipe froze and broke in the locker rooms causing extensive water
damage. It was discovered that insulation had not been placed on pipes
in this area of the building, and that problem has been corrected.
All water damaged areas have been repaired with the exception of the
gym floor which is not yet completed. Full costs for the repairs will
be covered by our insurance carrier and the contractor. |
| |
| Allen
Elementary School |
|
|
| The
remodel project for Allen Elementary School is in full swing and progressing
very smoothly. The addition to the building will be completed in the
spring, and remodeling will then move to the main building. The Allen
staff will be disrupted as the remodeling process continues, but it
will be worth it when the project is completed. |
| |
| District
Office |
| |
| Upgrades
to the District Office are occurring on an ongoing basis as time allows.
Plumbing for the heating system was replaced two years ago as was
the roof on the main building. Last year a complete remodel was completed
on the west annex including new carpets, windows, heating system,
and paint. This year in the main building, several office spaces have
received new carpeting and a paint job. In addition, the east annex
is currently being re-roofed. |
| |
| Future
projects slated for the District Office include new windows for the
remainder of the building and an exterior paint job. |
| |
| West
View Elementary School |
| |
| West
View has had upgrades to the HVAC system and new carpeting in parts
of the building. Still slated is the addition of a new gym and remodeling
of the existing gym into a cafeteria. Planning for this project will
begin next fall. |
| |
| High
School |
| |
| The
High School weight room facility will be expanded through a remodel
project, and roofs and HVAC systems in the oldest buildings will be
replaced. This work is scheduled for the 2004-2005 school year in
conjunction with the West View project. |
| |
| Funds
for all of these projects are provided through the Capital Projects
Fund as a result of the bond passed by our community for facilities
improvements. These funds can only be used for facility improvements.
In addition, the Head Start Program contributed funds for the remodel
of the west annex of the district office. |
| |
| There
are many more details to share about each facilities project--more
than can be shared in this newsletter. If you would like more details,
please contact your building principal/supervisor. Director of Auxiliary
Services, John Leander, and I would be happy to meet with any group
to answer questions and discuss individual projects in greater detail. |

|
| |
| Make-up
days for our two missed school days will be as follows: Students will
attend for one-half day on Friday, March 12th. The second half of
the day will remain dedicated to staff inservice. In addition, the
end of school will be moved to Friday, June 11th. I apologize for
any inconvenience this change in our school calendar causes you; however,
we are at the mercy of Mother Nature. |
| |
| Snow
days and late arrival days raise questions from staff regarding district
expectations. Decisions made to start school late are intended to
create a safer environment for transporting students to school. It
is a district expectation that staff members will make an effort to
report to work on time. However, staff safety is as important as student
safety, and each staff member is encouraged to use his/her best judgment
in deciding the best time to report to work on the these days. |

REQUESTS
FOR ABSENCE |
| |
| Jeff
Drayer, our Director of Human Resources and Assessment, is the superintendent’s
designee for approving leaves of absence and personal days as outlined
in the contract. Please send your e-mails with such requests directly
to Jeff after talking with your building principal/supervisor. |

| |
| Congratulations
to all district staff for the smooth transition to our new Skyward
Software Program for student record keeping. Thanks to our technology
support staff, who has assisted with the transition, as well Director
of Human Resources and Assessment, Jeff Drayer, who coordinated staff
training with the new student records system. I know it is very difficult
to move from something that you are accustomed to working with to
a new system, and I appreciate your patience and positive attitude
during this difficult time. |
