The Burlington-Edison School District uses spam filtering technology from a company named Tangent. Mail passing through the Tangent Barracuda filtering system is subjected to several tests to determine whether the e-mail is spam.
The filtering system will block most of the spam being sent to your e-mail address and you will not even know it was sent to you. Sometimes, you may still get messages in your inbox that have "[BULK]" or "[QUAR]" prefixed to the subject line. These are messages that may have spam characteristics or objectionable content, but the system was unable to classify it as 100% spam.
Tangent provides a Microsoft Outlook plug-in that you can install to submit certain messages that still get through as spam, so any further messages from the same sender will be blocked. The plug-in will install two envelope icons in your Outlook toolbar. To submit a message as spam, highlight the message in your inbox and click on the red envelope icon to submit it as spam. After the message has been submitted, it will be moved to your deleted items folder. You can also highlight a message and click on the green envelope to submit it as NOT spam. It is important to submit messages as both spam and NOT spam to provide the spam filtering database with enough information to reduce or eliminate spam messages from getting through to your inbox.
You can create an online account for your e-mail that will allow you to login to adjust your preferences for your e-mail, such as adding certain e-mail addresses to a "whitelist". Adding an e-mail address or domain to your whitelist will cause them to NOT be analyzed for spam. This can be helpful if legitimate e-mails are being categorized as spam and getting blocked. Adding them to your whitelist will allow the e-mails to come through.
After you have created an online account,
you can also login to your report server to see a list of e-mails that have been blocked by the spam filter. You can also get a statistical breakdown of e-mails analyzed by the system.
