Harcourt Electronic Test System - Getting Started

The Technology Department has installed the Harcourt Reading Electronic Test System on all student and teacher workstations in the district. If the program has been installed you will see a Harcourt shortcut on the desktop. You can also access the program going to Start >> Programs >> Harcourt Reading >> Electronic Test System.

There is a Teacher Edition and a Student Edition to the software. The Teacher Edition is installed on teacher’s workstations and can be used to set up a class of students and assign reading tests to those students. The Student Edition is installed on student workstations and can be used by students to take reading tests based on the Harcourt Trophy Series reading books.

The first time you use the program you will need to create a Teacher ID and password for yourself. To do this, when the program starts, click New User (figure 1.1).

A form will be displayed with two fields to fill out (figure 1.2), your Teacher ID and full name. Please use the first initial of your first name and your last name for your Teacher ID. For example, if your name was Jane Doe, you would enter JDOE as your Teacher ID. If you have a common last name and your Teacher ID has already been taken by someone else you can add a number “1” to the end of your Teacher ID. In the Enter New Name field, please enter your full name (first and last name).

After entering your Teacher ID and Name, click on the save button. The program will open up to the Bulletin Board (the main menu for the Teacher Edition). This is where you will perform all the tasks involved in setting up a class and assigning reading tests to students.

One very important thing to do when you create a new Teacher ID is to go to the Change Preferences section of the Bulletin Board and click on Teacher Password. A form will be displayed (figure 1.3) that will allow you to enter a password to access the Teacher Edition. Enter a password in the Enter New Password field and type it again in the Retype Password field. Then, click Save. Click “yes” when prompted. After doing this, you will be prompted for a password on subsequent logins to the Teacher Edition.

If you do not go to Change Preferences and set up a password for yourself, you will not be prompted for a password when logging into the Teacher Edition. This is not recommended, because it allows anyone to login to the Teacher Edition and perform administrative tasks using just your Teacher ID.

There is a Need Help note on the Bulletin Board that you can click on after you login to the Teacher Edition. The help system is really useful and would be a valuable resource to use when setting up your class to take the Harcourt Reading tests.

NOTE: When setting up new students for your class please use their first initial and last name as their login name and set their password to their student ID number. This will help in establishing a common convention for student accounts in the system and eliminate any technical glitches that may occur if two students have the same password.

If you need further help with the tasks involved in setting up Harcourt for your class, please contact Kay Grimstead or Sharon Mainard.
