    MARATHON:

    • 490 B.C.- Phidippides completed the legendary run from the plains of Marathon to Athens about 25 miles.
    • 1896- The modern Olympics came about and the idea for the marathon was embraced and became a part of the Olympics.
    • 1924- Distance for Marathon is finalized at 26.2 miles.
    • 2003- Paul Tergat breaks and now holds the world record for the mile in a time of 2:04:55.

    • 1865- Richard Webster runs probably the earliest recorded mile in 4:36.5.
    • 1954- Roger Bannister brakes the four minute mile barrier in a time of 3:59.4.
    • 1993- Noureddine Morceli brakes the 3:45-barrier in a time of 3:44.39.
    • 1999- Hicham El Guerrouj holds the current world record in a time of 3:43.13.
