English - Writing and the Media Syllabus
Course description: This course will examine the history, development
and the use of a variety of media forms.
Course objectives:
1. Students will become familiar with the history and vocabulary of
the movie and documentary genres.
2. Sudents will show understanding of the movie genre by creating a
short documentary.
3. Sudents will show their understanding of the movie genre by presenting
a movie review.
4. Sudents will learn the history and format of a newspaper.
5. Sudents will prepare a newspaper from a time era of their choice.
6. Sudents will learn the history and format of radio.
7. Sudents will prepare a short radio show.
8. Sudents will become familiar with the television genre.
9. Sudents will understand the role of musix as a fdorm of media.
10. Sudents will become familiar with a variety of advertising techniques.
11. Sudents will prepare a variety of advertising projects.

1. Movie Review

5. Talk Show/ Reality T.V.
6. Censorship Research & Discussion
7. Advertising samples
8. Final - Advertising Agencies will prepare and present and advertising
campaign

Grades:
Each assignment will be given a numerical value. The assignment and
value will be included on unit handouts.

Accelerated English 10B
Course Description: This is a communications course that is designed
for the highly motivated student. Sudents will be expexted to use speaking,
writing and reading skills in a variety of situations.
Specific Objectives:
1. The sudents will read 1200 pages independent of class time. The list
of acceptable titles will be provided to the student.
2. The sudents will present a variety of speeches.
3. The sudents will evaluate other students' speeches.
4. The sudents will demonstrate knowledge of persuasive theory.
5. The sudents will demonstrate understanding of drama.
6. The sudents will evaluate his/her own leadership skills.
7. The sudents will utilize small group dynamics to problem solv.
8. The sudents will increase his/her vocabulary using the SAT vocabulary
prep words.
9. The sudents will pursue his/her career pathway through career research.

Classroom Procedures
1. ABSENCES: It is the student's responsibility to get notes and assignments
for missed classes. The student will have as many days to do make-up work as
were missed.
2. LATE WORK: All assignments are worth points. If your work is one day late,
the equivalent points to 20% will be removed. After one day all late work will
be accepted at 65% until on week before the quarter ends.
3. TARDIES: Two tardies per semester will be excused with a reasonable explanation.

4. ENVIRONMENT:
Come to class with your homework, writing utensil and presentation materials.
Don't interupt others and be an active listener.
Know the difference between humor and meanness.
Use the pass hanging by my desk if you need to use the restroom.
Only bootled water in the classroom.
5. EVALUATION: Your grade will be based on a point system. I will tell you
how much each assignment is worth and the criteria on an assignment shet. Please
don't ask for your grade except before or after class.
