The student is required to have a 1 subject spiral notebook (70 page minimum) available at several local stores. The notebook is an assignment and is required not later than Friday, September 5, or the second day after arriving in the class, whichever is later.

I. OVERVIEW
Design and Construction Technology is a hands-on course based on industry/national standards and will require significant individual effort on the part of the student. As part of this course you will be required to learn Computer Aided Design (CAD) skills and complete several specific design projects as well as developing the basic skills necessary to construct these projects. You can expect to spend about 1/3 of your time in the classroom and 2/3 in the lab. The course is designed to develop the design and building skills necessary for entry-level jobs in carpentry related careers. You can expect to work as a member of a team and individually with an overall emphasis on learning-by-doing. You will complete both design and construction projects as part of the class. You will not be allowed to work in the lab without a completed set of plans and a cut list for each project. Each student will be required to purchase the materials used for personal projects. Due to severe storage limitations the school will only stock materials to be used in the skill development and school related projects.

Seniors may qualify for the Carpentry Pre-apprenticeship program during second semester (see your instructor or counselor for the specific requirements for applying).

Students are NOT allowed to work in the lab without safety glasses. Each student will be provided a set of glasses. If these are broken due to negligence or are lost, the student will be charged a $5.00 replacement fee.

II. MAJOR PROJECTS/ASSIGNMENT
You will be required to:
· Pay $10 Shop fee prior to beginning any work in the shop.
· Return all signed documentation relating to the class prior to being allowed to use any equipment in the lab.
· Complete all general and tool safety evaluations with 100% accuracy and successfully complete an operator-demonstration evaluation for each piece of power equipment in the lab.
· Complete the student leadership requirements each semester. Students who are active members of any Career and Technical Education Student Leadership Organizations (SLO), TSA, VICA, FCCLA, FFA, DECA, or FBLA need only document their activities in these organizations to complete the leadership requirement. Those students who do not participate in the SLOs will be required to complete additional activities to fulfill their leadership requirement (Students who do not complete the leadership requirement will have their grade reduced by 10%)
· Maintain a design notebook and log of your daily activities.
· Complete a minimum of four (instructor approved) major individual or team projects either of your own design or from available plans each semester. These projects will require a complete set of plans and a cut listing prior to beginning work. Complete a Culminating Master Project at the end of the second semester. The total number of project points you acquire during each semester determines your overall grade.

III. GENERAL EXPECTATIONS - You will be expected to:
· Attend class daily and be on time. Ten minute tardy policy applied for this class. The BEHS attendance policy is outlined in the student handbook.
· Bring all required materials to each class.
· Adhere to the Code of Conduct established by the class.
· Complete and turn-in assignment and projects on-time – (late assignments are reduced by 25% of the points possible for each class day they are late)
· Maintain the shop/lab in a neat, clean and safe condition at all times.

· Remain in the classroom/lab at all times during the class period unless excused by the instructor.
· Respect the group and individual rights of all class members.
· Be an active participant in the learning process.

IV. ASSESSMENT

The following grading scale will be used: A 92-100%, A- 90-92%, B+ 88-90%, B 82-88%, B- 80-82%, C+ 78-80%, C 72-78%, C- 70-72%, D+ 68-70%, D 60-68%, scores below 60% will not receive credit. The following weightings will be used in determining the final grade for the course:
· Assignment/projects 75%
· Attendance 15% - Students may make-up time missed before and after school in room 586
· Design portfolio and daily work log 10%
· Leadership – Students not completing the leadership requirements for the class will have their final grade reduced by 10%.

V. MAKE-UP POLICY
