I. OVERVIEW

Advanced Design is a hands-on individualized course in architectural design, mechanical design and manufacturing technology covering the state approved Skill Standards for the selected area. The course is designed to develop the advanced skills necessary for entry-level jobs or post-secondary studies in related careers areas. Advanced Design is an elective class. You will be expected to be an active participant in the learning process and you will be responsible for your own learning. The more effort you put into your work the more you will take away at the end of the class.

You will work individually and as a member of a team. In both cases the overall emphasis is on learning-by-doing. Portions of this class will be conducted in the Manufacturing Lab. This lab contains power tools and equipment, which if not operated safely and correctly, can result in serious injury. For this reason, each student will be required to pass a General Safety Evaluations as part of this class. Those students who complete 80% of the course competencies with a level-4 or higher (B) are eligible to apply for internships, which are available to students taking the advanced course. If you are a senior this may qualify you for several scholarships. If a Junior or Senior you have the opportunity to receive college credit for your work in selected community and technical college programs. If you are interested in pursuing the college credit possibility contact the instructor for additional information.

Students are NOT allowed to work in the lab without safety glasses. Each student will be provided a set of glasses. If these are broken due to negligence or are lost, the student will be charged a $5.00 replacement fee.

II. MAJOR PROJECTS/ASSIGNMENT

· Complete all safety evaluations to a 100% accuracy.
· Complete the student leadership requirements each semester. Students who are active members of any Career and Technical Education Student Leadership Organizations (SLO), TSA, VICA, FCCLA, FFA, DECA, or FBLA need only document their activities in these organizations to complete the leadership requirement. Those students who do not participate in the SLOs will be required to complete additional activities to fulfill their leadership requirement (Students who do not complete the leadership requirement will have their grade reduced by 10%)
· Maintain a written daily journal for all projects. The journals are to be done on the provided forms and must be turned-in weekly. Only journals with complete sentences and legibly written will be accepted.
If I can’t read it – you didn’t do it!

· Maintain a work portfolio (2” view binder) of all completed activities and projects. Your completed portfolio will be evaluated regularly. You will be provided a checklist with the items required in your portfolio for each assignment/project. (10% of grade)
· You will produce two major projects; a team design project (first semester) and an individual project (second semester); make at least two individual and one group presentations to the class each semester.
