Course Description:

In this class students will learn to keyboard by touch, develop a basic understanding and knowledge of computer terminology and operations, the Windows operating system, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and the Internet.  Students will also have the opportunity to develop touch-typing with the 10-key pad.  Learning how to properly format basic business letters, memos, reports and tables will be emphasized.  Students will also have a job search unit that will include preparing a resume, letter of application and job application form.

Required Supplies:  3½” Floppy disk, 1” 3-Ring notebook with dividers.

Grades are based upon the areas below using a weighted average method as follows:

Typing Speed                  25%          

Assignments                  15%          

Job Search Unit                  10%          
Leadership                  10%          

Tests, Technique, Projects: Technique exams, simulations that demonstrate use of software programs, formatting business correspondence, and general knowledge skills tests will be given throughout semester to prove mastery of course concepts.

Typing Speed:  Typing speed will be evaluated weekly to measure development.  The final timing speed will be calculated as the score for your grade. See attached grading rubric.

Assignments:  Daily keyboarding and document preparation lessons along with other class activities.

Job Search Unit:  Students will be required to complete a professional looking cover letter, resume, and job application to be placed in their PAWS portfolio.

Leadership:  All Career and Technical Education students are required by the state of Washington to develop leadership skills.  Student will be given a wide range of activities to participate in that will fulfill this requirement.   

Extra Credit:

Opportunities will be given throughout the term for students to do additional work in order to earn extra credit.  NO extra credit will be given the last week of the term for those students belatedly concerned about their grade. 

Absences

Make-ups for assignments/tests missed due to excused absences are allowed for absences on the due date or the date before. Students will be expected to catch up by coming in before or after school. It is the student’s responsibility to find out about assignments/information missed while absent.   Tests must be made up before or after school or during lunch within TWO school days.

NO POINTS will be awarded for any assignment; test or project missed or turned in late because of unexcused absences.  Arrangements for missed assignments due to planned excused absences MUST be made with the instructor ahead of time to receive full credit.  It is the student’s responsibility to find out what work has been missed and to make it up.
