RESEARCH
The
Class—
Throughout
this course we will develop and expand our ability to gather, assess, and
present information for a variety of purposes. We will address questions
including: Where can I do research? When do I research? How do I research?
Why should I research? Thesis writing, research writing, proper citation,
bibliography, and organization are significant elements of this course. We will
pursue traditional, non-traditional, and developing methods of research.

Students will also have a
variety of smaller assignments, vocabulary, and outside reading requirements.
Attendance and Behavior—“Regular attendance has a positive effect on student learning and achievement…Attempts at ‘make-up’ are virtually always going to fall short of actually being in school…” B-EHS Attendance Procedures.
Regular attendance and
appropriate, respectful behavior are expected.
Positive contribution to
the classroom community is a key component of this class.
Late Work—Late work is generally not accepted. It is the
student’s responsibility to obtain missed assignments and turn in on the
appropriate day (usually on the day after student’s return).
Reading—Outside Reading is a requirement for this course. The
reading assignment will be 400 for the first quarter, 800 for semester. Pages
will carry over from one quarter to the next. Ask me BEFORE you begin reading
if you expect a book to count toward your total. You must convince me you read
the book in a one-on-one book talk or some other method to be determined.
Journaling will also be a requirement.
Vocabulary—Students will also undergo consistent vocabulary and
grammar development and testing throughout the semester. Expect weekly
assignments and tests.

1. All students are expected to come prepared for class (books, proper writing materials—black or blue pens, journal, paper, novel, homework, etc.)
2. All students should come
prepared to learn.
3. No late work accepted
except by prior arrangement and at teacher’s discretion. Absent students are
expected to find out the assignment from a classmate and complete the work, due
one day following return to class (absent Monday, back Tuesday, homework due
Wednesday.) All homework due on day of absence is due on day of student’s
return.
Cheating
and Plagiarism—will not be tolerated.
It is not worth it, so don’t do it.
Cheating—the dishonest use of
your own or someone else’s work to better your performance and score on
assignments and tests.
Plagiarism—Taking work from a source without indicating the source;
copying ideas from a source without correctly indicating the source, even if
you have abstracted, summarized, or paraphrased the ideas/material; changing
only a few words, sentences or sections, but otherwise copying directly from a
source and passing it off as your own work.
I am available most mornings in room 554, and/or by appointment.
