The
Class—
Welcome to Advanced Placement
English! Mr. Munro encourages students to be independent critical thinkers,
careful readers, insightful contributors to class discussions, and cogent
writers.
The AP English course is a
two-semester, college-level program.
The program emphasizes the
following:
While all of you who participate in the course are strongly encouraged
to take the exam, any student who invests themselves and seeks to learn and
improve will be well-prepared for any college English course.
Assignments—I will make every effort to
have all assignments come to multiples of 25 points. Assignments will include
numerous shorter writings, multiple choice tests, and essays, all of which are
designed to help you prepare for the AP Exam. Group, research, and creative
assignments will also occur.
Reading—Your job is to engage in 3-4
novels of appropriate literary merit throughout the year. I will provide lists
and reading strategies. Some time will be given to read in class, but a
majority of the reading will occur outside of class.
Works
and materials may include:
David Copperfield—Dickens
Poetry
handouts
Antigone—Sophocles
Hamlet—Shakespeare
Tess of the D’Urbervilles—Hardy
Crime and Punishment—Dostoyevsky
The Importance of Being
Earnest—Wilde
Vocabulary—Vocabulary will come from
your readings, both in class and outside of class. Formats and requirements for
collecting vocabulary will be provided.

1. All students are expected to come prepared for class (books, proper writing materials—black or blue pens, journal, paper, novel, homework, etc.)
2. All students should come
prepared to learn.
3. No late work accepted
except by prior arrangement and at teacher’s discretion. Absent students are
expected to find out the assignment from a classmate and complete the work, due
one day following return to class (absent Monday, back Tuesday, homework due
Wednesday.) All homework due on day of absence is due on day of student’s
return.
4. Cheating and Plagiarism—will not be tolerated. It is not worth it, so don’t
do it.
Cheating—the dishonest use of
your own or someone else’s work to better your performance and score on
assignments and tests.
Plagiarism—Taking work from a source without indicating the source;
copying ideas from a source without correctly indicating the source, even if
you have abstracted, summarized, or paraphrased the ideas/material; changing
only a few words, sentences or sections, but otherwise copying directly from a
source and passing it off as your own work.
I am available most mornings in room 554, and/or by appointment.
Please contact me with questions, etc.
E-mail is typically the best method.
