Herbal Products
Over-the-counter herbal products to lose weight are not always safe. We cannot assume because 'fat burners' and herbal dietary supplements use natural products that they are effective or healthy.
Heidi Kalister, Pharmicist at the University of Washington reported that adolescents consider themselves well informed about herbals and use them frequently, girls using them more often then boys for acne, migraines, obesity, treating colds, to name a few. But, she cautions, "The following herbs have no evidence of effectiveness or report poor saftey. Ma Huang (Ephedra), Dandelion, Bearberry, Aconite, Comfrey, Pennyroyal." For some teens they think if one pill isn't achieving results, 2 or 3 might work better.
Caution: More is not better and in fact, dangerous! Ephedra, found in many products can cause serious side effects such as anxiety and nervousness, rapid heart rate, stroke, seizure and death. As with any prescription medication these medications should only be used after consulting with your doctor. Take time to become well educated about herbs and their potential side effects.
A healthy diet and exercise is the best way to lose weight but in an effort to 'lose faster' you may be putting your own health at risk. Another caution, if you are using these products after consulting with your doctor please do not assume they are safe to share and give to friends. As with any medication at school you must bring it to the health room and have a parent/physician signed form. Do not carry it with you because it is for your saftey!
