Library Idea of the Week

How can you help teachers at the end of the school year?

Teachers are ready for summer! How can you help them make the most of the few remaining days, keep kids actively engaged, and still learning? Here are a few ideas?

put together a list of suggested summer reading

identify short pieces of quality writing related to their subject matter that they can read aloud to classes

collaborate for one-day mini-lessons in the library, such as internet scavenger hunts

better yet, have the STUDENTS make up a library scavenger hunt to use with incoming freshman

send out a list of subject-related videos available (to combat entertainment video-itis)

put together a mini-lesson on reading the newspaper teachers can use with classes--they can use old newspapers from the library

write up an end-of-the-year survey teachers can use (for example, new magazines or books the library should get, a library services evaluations, etc)

Have a class put together promotional materials for the library for the fall--how about a bulletin board designing contest? book marks? Maybe a class could make book covers for old books that have lost their covers.

June 5 is National Hunger Awareness Day--have kids research info about hunger (maybe from a prepared cart or prepared weblist) and make posters about it. Also, I'm accepting canned food donations in lieu of fine payments on June 5. Kids can bring in up to 2 cans of food to pay overdue fines--each can is worth 50 cents. If they owe more than 1 dollar, they have to pay the remainder in cash. I'm taking the food to the local food bank.
