Library Idea of the Week
April 12-16, 2004

If you’re thinking about doing something to promote Earth Day (April 22), consider these possibilities:

bullet Update and distribute your list of enviro fiction and non-fiction
bullet Host a craft day in which you re-use old materials to make new things (search on line for “crafts with recyclables” and you’ll find a lot of stuff)
bullet Display books about the environment and conservation
bullet Post a list of conservation websites on your page. Here’s mine (you have to scroll a ways to find it): http://www.be.wednet.edu/ourschools/hs/library/history.htm
bullet Put an earth-fact-of –the-day in the bulletin board and/or post around school (I have my student aides do the research)
bullet Make cloth book bags and/or iron on new decals to old library conference bags that are stacking up in your basement
bullet Teach kids how to make envelopes out of wallpaper samples or magazine pages
bullet Invite in guest speaker(s) to talk about environmental issues
bullet Subscribe to Ready Made magazine, or get cool ideas from their website:  www.readymademag.org
bullet Check out “Not Martha”—cool site with ideas for recyclable crafts and fun stuff
bullet Highlight your Natural History collection. See my article for more ideas: http://www.be.wednet.edu/ourschools/Hs/library/natural_history_article.htm
bullet Organize a hike or litter pick up; have your library club adopt a highway
