Opening the Library

Mornings in the library are often busy—students come in to return materials, check out books, and use the computers. The priority is to help students and give the librarian time to prepare for classes, so the library assistant’s help is essential at the front desk, checking out books and handling fines and questions.

1.      The library opens immediately at 7:30, or sooner if there is someone available.

2.      Unlock the front door and prop open.

3.      Unlock the back door (workroom/ hallway entrance) and leave unlocked.

4.      Turn on all office and main lights (the lights in the main library area take a few minutes to warm up sometimes).

5.      Turn on all work station computers (Cathy’s, Blythe’s, front desk).

6.      Log in to front desk computer and open circulation program.

7.      Check in any books that are in the “in” box—make sure that they are not charged for one day’s overdue, since these are books that were returned yesterday.

8.      Unlock back storage area and leave open.

9.      Time permitting—if you’re not busy at the front counter—walk around and turn on all student computers.

Daily Maintenance

Keeping the library orderly is key in promoting students to treat the facilities respectfully.  During the day, assist students and student library assistants in:

1.      Keeping chairs at round tables and computer tables pushed in.

2.      Picking up stray papers and re-shelving stray books.

3.      Maintaining shelves—straightening and re-distributing books on crammed shelves.

4.      Maintaining displays—keeping bookholders full; keeping handouts restocked.

Closing the Library

The librarian will close the library at 3:00.  The following jobs must be done by anyone who closes the library:

1.      All computers shut down and turned off.

2.      All chairs pushed in.

3.      All lights off.

4.      All storage and work room doors locked.

5.      All books checked in.

6.      About 50 due date cards are stamped for the next school day.
