Following is a list of accommodations that can be considered in planning for the students successful participation in the mainstream classroom.

For the students who need support in reading:

  • Have the student read alternate material at his or her level.
  • Have someone (peer, volunteer, parent, aide, etc.) read the material to or with the student
  • Have the student listen to the material on tape.
  • Modify the length of the reading assignment.
  • Provide additional time to complete the reading assignment.
  • Provide the student with a reading guide.
  • Provide highlighted texts.
  • Discuss the content of the reading with the student before he or she reads the material.
  • Provide reading assignments that are relevant and motivating to the student.
  • Provide opportunities for the student to learn the information through other media (videotapes, films, filmstrips).
  • Use cooperative learning activities
