9A-Introduction
to Composition
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Length: 1 sem.
(NOTE: Students must pass this class before taking English 10A)
This class covers the Writing Essential Learnings: Specifically, students will 1) Study the 6 Writing Traits; 2) Use the Writing Process; and 3) Write in various modes, for a variety of purposes and audiences. Reading will be included in this course; students will be given regular reading assignments that will strengthen reading skills and provide topics for compositions. Finally, this class will include a unit of PAWS related assignments required for freshmen.
9B-Introduction
to Literature/Reading

Length: 1 Sem.
This class will emphasize the Reading Essential Learnings and take students towards two goals: 1) Improving reading skills across-the-curriculum, and 2) Increasing understanding and appreciation of literature. Students will be reading short stories, essays, poetry, novels, and plays to improve their reading comprehension skills and introduce them to the elements of literature. Although this class emphasizes the study of literature and reading, students will be writing on a regular basis.
10A-Sophomore
Composition/Literature

Length: 1 Sem.
Prerequisite: Pass English 9A
(NOTE: Students must pass this class before taking any junior/senior level English class.)
The goal of this class is to build on composition and reading skills learned in English 9A and 9B; students will work on or work towards the 10th grade benchmarks related to the Writing and Reading Essential Learnings. Students will be writing essays about literature as well as practicing their persuasive and expository essay writing skills. Literature study will involve reading full-length novels to provide students with an in-depth opportunity to study and write about significant literature.
10B-Sophomore
Communications
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Length: 1 Sem.
This class will concentrate on the Communications Essential Learnings. Students will complete three communications related units: 1) Public Speaking, 2) Leadership, and 3) Drama. This class will also include a unit covering sophomore PAWS assignments.
Basic Composition

Length: 1 sem
This course is for students who earned C's or lower in 9th and 10th grade English courses. Topics that will be included will be tailored to students' needs but students will cover all areas of writing via a review of the 6 Writing Traits: Content, Organization, Voice, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, and Conventions. After passing this course, students will be recommended into Intermediate or Advanced Composition to develop their skills to graduation level.
Reading and
Writing in the Media

Length: 1 Sem.
This class will involve the study of the various aspects of the media including newspapers, magazines, television, movies, and the Internet. Students will analyze and evaluate the style and content of these modes of information and entertainment. Students will give presentations and write essays in relation to this study. Students will also write FOR the media, producing short journalistic pieces, ad copy, scripts, etc.
Business Communications

Length: 1 Sem.
Prerequisite: MS Word (or Keyboarding)
May be cross-credited one time for Junior or Senior English. Good communication skills are the key to success in life! Learn to write business letters, and directions, to create charts and graphs, flyers and newsletters using MS Word and MS Publisher. Use of the Internet and E-mail is taught. This course is NOT accepted for HECB requirements.
Starting Your
Own Business

Length: 1 Sem.
Prerequisite: May be cross-credited one time for Junior or Senior English.
This is a TechPrep and DECA class that gives the students benefits besides a high school credit. The purpose of this class is to write a business plan for your "dream" business. Through TechPrep, students can receive college credit for completing the business plan required by the class. Also, through DECA competition, the students can submit their business plans to DECA and travel to State and National DECA conferences.
Creative Writing

Length: 1 Sem.
Students in this class need to like, even love to write, especially in genres such as fiction, poetry, and non-fiction. Creative writing in the workplace using computer software such as Publisher and Power Point may also be produced. Students will learn how to publish their work and be encouraged to make this happen.
Intermediate
Composition
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Length: 1 Sem.
This course is a survey of the various types of writing in Jr/Sr Composition classes. These types will include journalistic, research, creative, and essay writing. This class is recommended for juniors who would like to try all types of writing and/or who feel they need some preparation for courses such as Research writing and Advanced Composition.
Research Writing

Length: 1 Sem.
NOTE: Recommended for seniors, but can be taken by juniors with A's and B's in 9A and 10A.
Learn to write a research paper from the search itself through to the final draft complete with documentation. A good course to prepare students for college level writing. Students will be allowed to work on research papers from other classes as part of this class.
Junior/Senior
Reading
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Length: 1 Sem.
Prerequisite: Students must show a need for this class via test scores, previous English grades, not passing the WASL.
Students who want to improve reading skills and develop an interest in reading will work on reading/ study skills, vocabulary improvement, and reading via real life reading that will include popular literature and current magazines/newspapers.
American Literature
I

Length: 1 Sem.
A chronological study of American literature. This course will trace American literature from its beginnings up to the Civil War. This course offers students an opportunity to reinforce their study of America's history by studying its literature.
American Literature
II
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Length: 1 Sem.
Students need not have taken American Literature I to take this course, but it will be a continuation of the chronological study of American Literature. This course will cove the period after the Civil War to the mid 20th century. Literature will be read, discussed and various written, oral, and creative projects will be completed.
British Literature
Survey
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Length: 1 Sem.
A chronological overview of British Literature. Students will begin with the Anglo Saxon legends and move through history by reading works from each major literary period. Students will have the opportunity to read literature prior to the development of America as well as parallel literary development after the 17th century with that of American Literature.
Contemporary
Literature
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Length: 1 Sem.
Late 20th Century literature, both American and the world, will be read, discussed, and written about in this class. Depending on the teacher and students enrolled, various thematic units may be studied.
Heroic and
Epic Literature
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Length: 1 Sem.
Heroes have endured since time began and stories began to be told. This course will examine development of heroes through a balance of classic and contemporary texts including mythology, novels, epic poetry, folk tales, short stories, and film. after beginning our study with Greek and Roman mythology, we'll then journey to the medieval period with "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight"," Beowulf", and "Morte D'Arthur". Then to the contemporary with Louis Sachar's "Holes" before finishing up our semester with a variety of futuristic stories and science fiction. This is a reading extensive class but will be featured consistently for homework, tests, and projects.

A survey of Shakespeare's great plays including major tragedies, comedies and histories. Activities will include reading, class discussions/presentations, and writing assessments.
Length: 1 Sem.
Prerequisite: Requires teacher permission
(May be taken by Juniors or Seniors for English Credit. May be taken by Sophomores or repeated by Juniors or Seniors for Non-English credit.) This class will introduce students to a variety of speech events and debate styles. Students will learn organization, research, writing, and communication skills. The purpose of the class is to prepare students for forensics' competition.
Journalistic
English

Length: 2 Sem.
Prerequisite: Requires teacher permission.
May be taken only one time for English credit, either at grade 11 or 12.
This course will cover the fundamentals of journalism. Students will be introduced to word processing and will be responsible for producing the school newspaper.
