Nearly
a quarter of a million teenagers are involved in FBLA-PBL nationwide.
A program was proposed by Hamden L. Forkner in 1937. This program
became known as Future Business Leaders of America, and in 1942 the
first chapter was chartered in Johnson City, Tennessee on February
3. By December 1942, the total number of chapters is 41. By 1950,
there are 10 state chapters. 200,000 students were participating by
1987, and membership has been growing since.
As stated in
Article II, section 1 of the National Bylaws, the purpose of FBLA
is "to provide, as an integral part of the instructional program,
additional opportunities for secondary students (grades 9-12) in
business and/or business related fields to develop vocational and
career supportive competencies and to promote civic and personal
responsibilities." In other words, students become members
of FBLA because they want to have an opportunity to get a head start
on their future, both in college and in the workplace.
