Student Learning Objectives - As a direct result of reading, studying, and discussing Unit II, "Early Human History," each student shall be able to:

1. Identify and locate on a Washington State map the Coastal and Plateau Indian tribes of Washington.

PROBLEMS:

2. How would you explain the fewer number of Plateau Tribes in Eastern Washington as compared to the Coastal Tribes west of the Cascades? This should be a good paragraph. Cite at least two conditions leading to the discrepancy.

3. Contrast the cultural differences between the Coastal and Plateau Indian cultures residing in Washington State. Include clothing, shelter, diet and transportation.

4. Identify the four major exploring countries who sent land and sea explorers into the Washington State area. How did each country get to the Pacific Northwest?

5. Describe the major objectives, and the most important results of the1804-06 Lewis and Clark Expedition. What was the purpose of the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1804-1806? There are six stated objectives; include them all.

6. What were the following people known for in their exploration of this area: Juan Perez, James Cook, John Meares, Vitus Bering, George Vancouver, David Thompson, and Robert Gray? Please start with the name of each and a couple sentences of their accomplishments.

7. What animal furs were the most valuable and where were the major fur posts in Washington State located? Answer as a paragraph.

8. Explain the major economic role played by the Pacific Fur Company, Northwest Fur Company, Hudson's Bay Fur Company, and the Rocky Mountain Fur Company in the development and progression of Washington State. This should be a full paragraph or two, probably half a page or more.

9. Why was the Missionary Era (1834-1847) a major contribution to the development of Washington State? Describe the impact missionaries had on the region.

10. Compare and contrast the missionary contributions and experiences of Waiilatpu and Lapwai. Compare means of course to find similarities; contrast means to find differences.

11. What caused the Whitman massacre to take place on November 29, 1847? Describe background conditions and the events of the massacre.

12. Explain what the 1877 Nez Perce retreat was all about. Paragraph format.
