Unit Student Learning Objectives
Student Learning Objectives -- As a direct result of reading, studying, and discussing Unit III, "19th Century Settlement", each student shall be able to:
MAP:
1. Locate the Oregon Trail's route and label the prominent points on a United States map.
PROBLEMS:
2. Describe how Washington's northern border was established and became an International Boundary. Include the countries involved in disputes, who was here first (besides the Native Americans). and when the boundary was finally determined. Give at least two details in the timeline toward creating the boundary.
3. Explain why Washington seperated from the Oregon Territory in 1853. Include some political and geographical reasons. Also include a bit about the size of the original Oregon Territory.
4. Discuss why it took Washington so long to become a State. Explain what was happening during the period between becoming a territory and becoming a state. Also talk about the process of developing a constitution.
5. List the most important 19th century economic activities in Washington and how they helped to further develop our State. Include shipping and the railroads, logging, mining, farming and fishing.
Unit III Essay - Minimum one page:
Describe Washington State's Journey to Statehood. Include the process of becoming
part of the Oregon Territory, then the Washington Territory, and finally Washington
State. Include population issues and factors driving population growth.
