Unit Student Learning Objectives

Student Learning Objectives --As a direct result of reading, studying, and discussing Unit VI, "The Region's Economy," each student shall be able to:

MAPS:

1. Identify and locate Washington State's most abundant natural resources--soils, water, minerals, and forests.

2. Identify and locate the distribution patterns of Washington State's agricultural croplands and cattle farms (include milk, cattle, wheat, apples, and potatoes).

PROBLEMS:

3. Explain why commercial fishing and shellfish harvesting have become economically valuable to Washington State.

4. Explain Washington's history with the logging industry and the role of Weyerhaeuser.

5. Identify Washington State's renewable and nonrenewable energy sources.

6. Explain the importance of the Columbia River's hydroelectric system.

7. Describe Washington State's current transportation system/network.

8. Explain how Washington State is contributing to the growth of the technology and manufacturing sectors of the economy. (Hint: Two major companies in our state contribute in these sectors.) Describe the effect these sectors have on Washington State's economy and the national economy.

9. Describe the difference between domestic and international trade and, how imports and exports are effecting Washington's economy.

10. Identify popular recreational activities and major tourist attractions in Washington State, and where one would go to participate and/or observe.
