Course Description

Technology Survey is an introductory computer class where the student will learn the alphabetic keyboard and the 10-key pad by touch, obtain a basic understanding and knowledge of Windows, MS Word, Excel, Publisher and PowerPoint. The student will be able to demonstrate the proper format for business letters, memos, reports, and tables. An employment unit where the student creates a personal resume, letter of application (cover letter) and a sample job application form is a required part of this course. This course is intended for students who wish to obtain an introduction to computers, plus it counts as an occupational class. It is a one-semester course earning 0.5 credits. For Burlington-Edison High School students it meets the graduation requirement for Info. Tech. Survey.

Formula for Success

The first objective of this course is for the student to learn to touch type (without looking at the keyboard and to do so with speed and accuracy. Your success at accomplishing this depends on the following:

Unit 1

Alphebetic Keyboarding (Microtype Pro)

Unit 2

10-Key Pad (Microtype Pro)

  • Lessons 1-5

Microsoft Word

  • Lesson 1 -- Create documents, save, open insert date, insert and delete text, proofreader's marks, business letter format, and memo format.
  • Lesson 2 -- Text alignment, boldface, italic, bullets and numbering, insert symbols, font style and size, vertical centering, and the undo function.
  • Lesson 3 -- Indent text, move and copy text, change line spacing, change margins.
  • Lesson 4 -- Formatting reports, headers/footers, page numbering, footnotes and endnotes.
  • Lesson 5 -- Column and table features
  • Lesson 6 -- Insert clip art, review letters, memos, and reports.

Microsoft Excel

  • Lesson 1 -- Create and save a spreadsheet, basic formatting such as fonts and font styles.
  • Lesson 2 -- Creating formulas, insert and delete columns and rows, borders, colors and shading.
  • Lesson 3 -- Create charts and graphs
Unit 5

Employment Unit

  • Lesson 1 -- Create personal resume, letter of application (cover letter), prepare sample job application form.
Unit 6

Microsoft Publisher

  • Lesson 1 -- Learn how to create boxes, insert clip art, and use wizards to create a flyer, card or invitation, and a one-page newsletter.
Unit 7

Microsoft PowerPoint

  • Lesson 1 -- Learn to create a presentation; which includes selecting a slide format, a slide background, inserting clip art, word art, graphs, bullets, and numbers.
  • Lesson 2 -- Create a 6-slide presentation using the skills learned in the first lesson.
