Unit One: CAREER EXPLORATION

Description of Unit:

To meet the competencies for the career exploration unit of this class, the student will complete the following assignments with a minimum grade of 2. If a grade of 1 is received, the student must redo or complete the assignment. Test grades will be averaged in as a percentage of the points possible. A reminder - all assignments must be completed before a grade is earned.

Assignments:

  1. Read Chapter 2 in the Textbook and complete the questions on page 42, "Thinking Critically", 1 - 5. Be sure to use complete sentences.
  2. In the Workbook, complete the following workbook activities: Activities 2-1, 2-2, 2-4, 2-5, 2-7.
  3. Go to the career placement center or check with your instructor for an acceptable on-line version and take at least one career profile test to help you develop your personal career profile.
  4. Write one paragraph describing how you plan to use the "Career Decision Making" model on page 28 of the Textbook.

  1. Read Chapter 3 in the Textbook and complete the questions on page 64, "Thinking Critically", 1-5. Be sure to use complete sentences.
  2. In the Workbook, complete the following workbook activities: 3-1, 3-2, 3-3, 3-6.

_______ Test, Chapter 3

  1. Go to the career placement center and complete the following assignment. If the WOIS is not available or the teacher suggests another program, use whatever program that will accomplish the task.

    Using the WOIS handbook and the four-digit number for your chosen career, print out information about that career. Turn in this printout. Also, do a printout from the "References to Educational Programs" section which relates to your career. You will use this printout for Assignment 5. You will also need 2-3 printouts of colleges or vocational schools from which you can get a degree or certificate in this particular field. Use this printout for Assignment 8. Hand in all printouts.

  2. Using your WOIS (or other program) printouts, type a 1-3 page paper double spaced answering the following questions about your career.

 

    1. What would some of your job duties be?
    2. What is the outlook for this career?
    3. What preparation do you need for this career?
    4. Where can you get additional training for this career?
    5. What are some drawbacks to this career?
    6. What type of work environment would you have?
    7. What are the wages and fringe benefits?
    8. What type of personal characteristics do you need?
    9. What are the advancement opportunities?
    10. What are the hiring practices for this career?
    11. What kind of degree or certificate can you receive from additional schooling relating to this career?
    12. Name three schools you might be interested in attending to get this degree or certificate.
