Course Philosophy and Rationale:

This Applied Mathematics course is an integrated set of classroom-tested competency-based materials. The course addresses the needs of contextual learners and is designed to unlock the learning potential of students who learn abstract concepts through concrete experiences.

This is a rigorous course that integrates hands-on laboratory activities, cooperative learning opportunities, and video programs with text materials that teach important math concepts by emphasizing problem-solving and decisions-making through workplace applications.

The Skagit Net School Applied Mathematics course utilizes eighteen (18) individually bound units which are designed to be used as a semester course earning .5 credits. The materials provide opportunties for students to investigate, construct, and apply algebra and geometry principles through contextual, hands-on learning.

This course is intended for student who wish to gain math credit for 9th and 10th grade classes. It is written using the Benchmarks outlined in the Washington State Essentional Academic Learning Requirements and will prepare students for the Washington Assessment of Student Learning taken by 10th graders in April/May of each year.

Each unit will require a week to complete. A student workbook will be distributed on a weekly basis, beginning when you meet your instructor during the first week of school. Please print each unit as they are assigned, complete and fill in the material and submit it to your instructor on a weekly basis. Each unit exam will be administered when the completed worksheets are submitted.
